Hurt in an Accident and Not Sure Where to Start?

The days after a motor vehicle accident can be disorienting. Your car may be fine, or already dealt with, but your body is telling a different story. Neck stiffness, low back pain, headaches, trouble sleeping, and that nagging soreness that just won't settle down are all common after even a low-speed collision.

A lot of people wait, hoping it'll resolve on its own. Some do. But many MVA injuries, especially whiplash-type injuries to the soft tissue of the neck and back, become harder to treat the longer they go unaddressed. Getting assessed early gives your recovery the best possible start.

If you've been in an accident, you don't have to navigate this alone, and you don't have to pay out of pocket to get help. Give us a call or drop in and let us handle all your unanswered questions for dealing with paperwork, insurance and let you focus on getting better.

What Does MVA Physiotherapy Treat?

Motor vehicle accidents affect the body in ways that aren't always visible on imaging. The most common injuries we see are:

Whiplash and neck pain, caused by the rapid forward-and-backward movement of the head during impact. Symptoms can include stiffness, headaches, shoulder tension, and referred pain down the arms.

Low back pain and soft tissue injuries, often from bracing impact or from the seat restraint loading the lumbar spine.

Concussion and post-concussion symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, and sensitivity to light or noise.

Fractures and other structural injuries, assessed and coordinated with your physician where needed.

Recovery timelines vary widely. Some patients need 10 sessions; others with more complex presentations may need significantly more. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic picture after your initial assessment.

MVA Care at Camrose Physiotherapy

Our team here at Camrose Physiotherapy has experience working with MVA patients at every stage of recovery, from the acute phase in the first days after an accident through to full return to work and daily life.

Treatment is hands-on and individualized. Your physiotherapist will assess the specific tissues and structures involved, not just your symptoms, and build a plan around your goals, whether that's returning to work, caring for your kids, getting back to sleep, or simply moving without pain.

Our physiotherapy team including Ryan Peters, BSc Kin, MSc PT, Shelby Kirk, BSc Kin, MSc PT, Dan Gillespie, MScPT, PhD, Jana Evenson, BSc PT, and Jessica Bosse, BSc Kin, MPT, each bring strong manual therapy and exercise-based rehabilitation experience to MVA care. Where IMS or dry needling is appropriate for persistent muscle tension or nerve-related pain, our team is extensively trained in both.

We also direct bill for MVA and WCB claims, so there are no upfront costs to worry about.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

assignment

Step 1: Initial Assessment

Your physiotherapist will take a thorough history of the accident and your symptoms, assess your movement and function, and identify the structures involved. This is also where we confirm your billing and coverage details so you're not dealing with paperwork at every visit.

Step 2: Hands-On Treatment

Treatment typically includes manual therapy, soft tissue work, and IMS or dry needling where appropriate, alongside a gentle, progressive exercise program tailored to your stage of recovery.

Step 3: Progressive Recovery and Return to Life

Your plan is adjusted as you improve. Goals shift from pain relief to restored mobility, strength, and function, until you're back to work, to daily life, and to the activities that matter to you.

What Patients Notice Through MVA Recovery

Pain relief, often within the first few sessions. Reducing acute muscle tension and nerve irritation early makes everything else in the recovery process easier.

Better sleep and daily function. Neck pain and low back stiffness affect far more than movement. Patients consistently notice improved sleep, reduced headaches, and an easier time getting through the day as treatment progresses.

A clear path back. MVA recovery can feel open-ended and uncertain. Having a team that tracks your progress, adjusts the plan, and gives you honest timelines makes a real difference.

This is very common. Whiplash and soft tissue injuries often don't fully present until 24 to 72 hours after an accident. It doesn't mean the injury is less real, and it doesn't affect your ability to receive covered treatment.

It varies depending on the nature and severity of your injuries. Some patients recover fully in 10 to 15 sessions; others with more complex presentations may need ongoing care over several months. Your physiotherapist will give you an honest estimate and adjust the plan as your recovery progresses.
